SKIRBALL x Phillip Guston / Trenton Doyle Hancock
"Masters of Subversion: Confronting Cigar" is a multidisciplinary, in-gallery performance at the Skirball Cultural Center. It serves as a live, immersive interpretation of the exhibition Draw Them In, Paint Them Out: Trenton Doyle Hancock Confronts Philip Guston. The performance uses spoken word, live music, and dance to explore Philip Guston’s 1969 painting Cigar, examining themes of white supremacy, personal trauma, and identity through Black and Jewish perspectives. The performance aims to prompt reflection on how individuals act as "masters of subversion" in their own lives, confronting false narratives and personal, hidden truths.
